da betsul: Earlier this week, it was reported that West Ham United tabled a £20million bid for Barcelona defender Andre Gomes, per ClaretandHugh.
The Hammers are keen to secure the midfielder as they look to bring in reinforcements to their squad.
The report claims that Manuel Pellegrini is keen to acquire the Portugal international’s signature because he wants to pair him with Declan Rice at the London Stadium.
The former Manchester City boss is said to have prioritised the signing of the star as the Irons look to build on their 10th-placed finish last term.
The Irons face competition from Everton, who took Gomes on loan for the 2018-19 season – he made 29 appearances in all competitions, scoring once and laying on one assist – and some reports even claim the midfielder has already snubbed the Irons’ advances in favour of returning to Goodison.
So it appears West Ham are up against it in trying to beat the Toffees to his signature, but were the east Londoners right to have tabled an improved bid after seeing an initial £18m offer rejected?

“You feel that if West Ham sign a player like Gomes then Jack Wilshere’s days at the club would be numbered. There’s no doubting the latter’s ability but Gomes would be a more than sensible signing. £20m feels like nothing in today’s market and for the type of player they’d be getting, it’s a no brainer. The Portuguese showed at Everton this season that he can adjust to the speed of the Premier League so the Hammers would be getting a fine player.”
Billy Meyers
“They are not right to bid £20m, as they should be bidding more. There is no point messing around when other clubs have expressed an interest, whilst Everton obviously have a major advantage in the race for his signature as he spent 2018/19 on loan with them. West Ham must bid a lot more and try to blow Everton out of the water before other clubs start to wake up.”
Ben Goodwin
“£20m for Gomes would be an absolute steal. He is a Euro 2016 winner, has a year of Premier League experience under his belt and was hugely sought-after during his time with Valencia. His big move to Barcelona didn’t work out, but he still has all the physical and technical skills needed for the English top-flight as well as big-game and trophy-winning experience. His arrival would also be perfect for Rice, who is crying out for a quality midfield partner, but it seems West Ham have a lot of convincing to do with Gomes so keen on returning to Merseyside.”
