da esport bet: The Stadium of Light may soon be on fire, with Will Grigg linked with a move to replace Josh Maja at Sunderland, per the Daily Mail and picked up by HITC.
What’s the word?
The Daily Mail reported on Tuesday, January 8 (print edition, page 72) that Jack Ross has shown an interest in taking Grigg on loan for the remainder of the season, as the Black Cats boss prepares for life without Maja.
Maja’s future at the club continues to be in doubt, having rejected Sunderland’s latest efforts at offering an improved contract – reports suggest an increase of seven times his previous wage was tabled before the striker performed a shock U-turn.
The 20-year-old was understood to be happy with the potential £5,000 per week tabled on Thursday, before the club’s owner announced that his agent convinced him otherwise and the contract would not be signed after all.
In a bid to cover Maja’s loss, should the club be forced to sell with his contract set to expire in the summer, Sunderland are chasing Wigan Athletic’s Grigg, who has shown a lethal touch in front of goal in League One.

Is Grigg a better option than Maja?
Comparing Grigg and Maja as like-for-like strikers is a little unfair, but the 27-year-old Latics star is a clinical forward at this level.
Without his goals during either the 2015/16 or 2017/18 season, Wigan would not have earned promotion back to the Championship, with Grigg responsible for 25 and 19 of his side’s successful strikes respectively.
20 goals in the 2014/15 season with MK Dons also earned the 13-cap Northern Ireland international his move to the DW Stadium.
The Championship may not be best suited to the £1.35million rated strikers’ abilities, with only nine goals in 49 games when competing in England’s second tier, but should Ross complete the loan move, it would set up Sunderland perfectly for their automatic promotion push this season.
At present, the Black Cats have slipped to third place, behind league-leaders Portsmouth and the chasing Luton Town following Saturday’s one-all draw with Charlton.
