There has been disagreement in recent weeks between West Ham and the FA over Scott Parker’s England future, and whether he needs to move back to the Premier League to guarantee his England career. Sam Allardyce could lose his star man as a result, because of the common belief that Parker needs to move to avoid harming his chances of playing in the national side. Should England hopefuls be required to play in the Premier League?
Allardyce has berated the FA and Fabio Capello, for allegedly telling Scott Parker he needed to quit West Ham to further his England career. Capello has since denied this, and said that it is purely the length of the Championship season and the amount of games that poses a problem rather than the actual division itself.
West Ham were relegated last season, despite the impressive performances of Scott Parker. Just because a player has dropped down a level doesn’t make him any less talented or skillful, Parker will play at the same level in the division week in, week out, and his quality will shine through regardless of the opposition. There isn’t really any logic in not picking England players from the Championship, if they are good enough then they deserve a chance. If they are playing regularly at the top of their game and playing week in week out then there is no reason why they shouldn’t be considered for England duty.
The Premier League bias towards the England squad shouldn’t exist and if England rigidly and firmly refuse to pick Championship players just because of the division they play in, then they will be missing out. Surely it is better to pick players who are playing and impressing regularly in competitive matches every week with their clubs in the Championship, than those who are third or fourth choice in their Premier League sides and not even getting a game.
It has been rare for a Championship player to gain an England call up, one of the most recent was Jay Bothroyd when he was top scorer at Cardiff City in the Championship. Many saw this as a dire statement of where the England team was at, but it is unclear whether the criticism was just because of the player himself, or whether it is due to the bias that exists between the lower leagues and the England side.
There has long been a belief that a bias exists between the England squad and the Premier League’s big clubs, with players from the less glamorous sides missing out more often that not. This seems to be carried over to the Championship, few players have been picked for the England side while plying their trade at the level. Sure it isn’t the same level as the Premier League, but a quality player will shine through regardless and many of the England stars at one point in their career played and impressed in the lower leagues, either during their youth development like Ashley Cole at Crystal Palace, or before being plucked out and signed by one of the top flight just like Phil Jagielka was. Is there really that much difference between the quality of the top sides in the Championship and the bottom sides in the Premier League anyway?
There are many good players in the Championship who would do a fine job for England and perhaps perform even better than those who get criticised every time they put on the England shirt for under-performing. Perhaps someone from Championship level would be more likely to show commitment and passion, and make the most of the rare opportunity they have been given, than those who seem to take it for granted.
Young English players are frequently given a chance by Capello despite the fact that they may not have even played that much for their senior side, surely it is better to pick someone who has established themselves with their club regardless of the division, and is playing and impressing frequently. It seems there is a tendency to get overlooked if you aren’t playing in the top tier. There is a lack of credibility accorded to the Championship with regards to naming England players, but surely individual players are more than capable of stepping up, if they are good enough. It would be a shame to overlook quality, just because of the division they play in.
