da realbet: I’m going to go for Karim Benzema. I’m aware that this may stretch the realms of possibility to the limit, but I think it just about fits within the boundaries. It is clear that at the top of most Spurs’ fans wish list for January is a new striker of real quality.
da roleta: I believe Benzema remains a realistic, albeit optimistic, prospect due to his lack of first team opportunities at Real Madrid. He has been far from a regular at the Bernabeu, but considering he cost Madrid €35million he would not come cheap. That said I believe a loan deal could best suit all parties as at 23 he is still very young, so Madrid may want to see him get some game time, whilst he can aid Tottenham on the domestic front as he would be illegible for European competition.
This was a player that dazzled everyone in his days at Lyon and had the world at his feet when Madrid came calling. He may not have carried this impressive form over to Spain but he has shown recently that despite a stuttering start to his career at Madrid, he still has bags of talent. A very impressive performance for France against England with a well taken goal was followed up by a hat trick in the Champions League, his first for Real Madrid as well as playing a decisive role when coming on during their 3-1 victory against Hercules. Yet despite this resuscitation he has undergone under Jose Mourinho, he continues to lurk behind Gonzalo Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo in Real Madrid’s strike force pecking order.
Obviously there is no great shame in taking a player who has failed to really establish themselves in the Spanish capital. You just need to take a look at our signing of the summer, Rafael Van der Vaart, to see there is real quality that doesn’t always work at in the high pressure, highly competitive surroundings of the Bernabeu. It would be interesting to see if they could form a deadly partnership to launch an assault on the upper echelons of the Premier League.
Other centre forward candidates being touted to come to White Hart Lane include Semih Senturk of Fernabache and Newcastle’s Andy Carroll. For me Benzema remains the best option out of these three. Although Senturk has an impressive strike rate for Fernabache there is no denying the Premiership is played at a much higher level. Not that I don’t believe players from lesser leagues around Europe cannot step up to the plate in the Premier League, Luka Modric being a fine example of someone who did exactly that, but it is always a risk and strikers particularly tend to struggle at least at first and we need someone who can hit the ground running. For all Carroll’s qualities that he has been demonstrating at Newcastle I am not his biggest fan and am not convinced he will fit in to Tottenham’s style of play as comfortably as Benzema. Yet he does have the very big advantage of being a proven Premier League goal scorer, well at least for half a season. So for me Benzema remains are best option or have I just warped the realm of reality with fantasy?
