da roleta: Tottenham Hotspur will look to sign off at their temporary Wembley home with a win when they host Leicester City on the final day of the Premier League season on Sunday.
da luck: Spurs have spent a relatively successful year at England’s national stadium while their new ground has been built, and this will be their final game there before they play in their venue from the start of the 2018/19 campaign.
The north London outfit guaranteed that they will once again be playing Champions League football next term as their 1-0 win at home to Newcastle United – coupled with Chelsea only managing to draw 1-1 with Huddersfield Town at Stamford Bridge – on Wednesday night saw them secure a top-four spot, and they will know that three points against the Foxes will see them finish in third, too.
Harry Kane netted the winner against the Magpies in a match where Mauricio Pochettino’s men weren’t at their best, and they will hope to maintain their fine form at home – they have taken 40 points from 54 available at Wembley – when they host Claude Puel’s side.
Pochettino switched formation and made three changes to the side that was disappointingly beaten 1-0 by West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns last weekend for the visit of the Tyneside outfit, as Ben Davies, Moussa Sissoko and Son Heung-Min came in for Danny Rose, Toby Alderweireld and Erik Lamela.
The 46-year-old may well be considering making some more alterations on Sunday though, in order to give some of his fringe players an opportunity to impress now they have qualified for the Europe’s elite club competition.
Here is how Tottenham must line up when they host Leicester…
Michel Vorm looks set to leave Tottenham after this match with his contract expiring at the end of the season, and seeing as he has been a great and patient servant for the north London outfit, he should be handed one final start ahead of Hugo Lloris against Leicester.
Pochettino switched from the three-man defence he deployed against West Brom for the visit of Newcastle, but he should use it again against Leicester and bring Alderweireld back in alongside Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen, in what may also be the Belgium international’s final game for the club unless talks over a new deal progress this summer.
With Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier both doubts for the clash against the Foxes, Pochettino should hand Kyle Walker-Peters a rare chance to impress at right wing-back on Sunday.
The 21-year-old shone on the opening day against Newcastle but has only made one appearance since with Trippier and Aurier ahead of him in the pecking order.
The England U21 international must start alongside Victor Wanyama, the returning Eric Dier and Ben Davies across the middle of the park, with Moussa Sissoko dropping down to the substitutes’ bench, with Spurs fans on Twitter bashing Pochettino for his latest comments on the France international.
Lucas Moura must have wondered what he needs to do to get a start in recent weeks having seen Erik Lamela picked ahead of him, but he should finally get his chance in the starting line-up against Leicester.
Pochettino’s trusty trio of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-Min started against Newcastle on Thursday, and the Argentine boss should bring Lucas into the XI to replace the latter.
That leaves Harry Kane up top, and the England international knows that he will need to at least match the four goals he scored in a Premier League fixture against the Foxes last May if he is to have any chance of taking the Golden Boot off of Liverpool’s Mo Salah.
