Everton have found it tough to work together as a team and combinations have been difficult to finalise for manager Marco Silva, who has constantly made changes to his team throughout the campaign.
But, apart from Lucas Digne, Sigurdsson has probably been the club’s most consistent player this season and his experience has been of great value for the manager and the other players in the team. Indeed, while Toffees must have been shocked when the club spent around £40-£45m to sign him from Swansea in 2017, the Icelandic star is looking worth the money.
Since being moved to the number ten role in the team with Bernard to his left and either Richarlison or Theo Walcott on his right, the former Tottenham ace has been able to control the way Everton attack and how they set up to run at opposition defenders.
His excellent game-management and ability to give the perfect pass has unfortunately been let down by the lack of a proper centre-forward. Nonetheless, he has been able to create space for players like Bernard and Richarlison to run into before attacking from the flanks or giving crosses into the box.
He’s proven to be the key creator in the Everton team due to his brilliant skill and ability to read the game and adapt under certain circumstances.
The Iceland international’s hand in that will be of high importance for the manager who will be desperate to get some consistent wins under the belt before the season concludes in May. £45m isn’t cheap by any stretch of the imagination but Sigurdsson’s importance to Everton’s team amid this growing project on Merseyside is invaluable.
