The transfer window throws up some sensational stories, and for a newly promoted club, it’s hard to know what to believe.
A few weeks back, many Sheffield United fans were talking about the prospect of signing Franck Ribery, and this time they have been linked with another ageing star in the shape of Emmanuel Adebayor.
Unlike Ribery though, the Togolese man hasn’t been playing at the highest level for the past few years. He has been plying his trade in Turkey.
Wilder’s ability
During his tenure as Sheffield United manager, Chris Wilder has shown an uncanny ability of getting the best out of players many had thought were past their best.
For example, 12 months after David McGoldrick was released from Ipswich he was Player of the Season at a promoted side. The striker isn’t the only one to have benefitted from this though. Mark Duffy has enjoyed a late career resurgence, enjoying one of his best goalscoring seasons after netting six goals last term.

A bridge too far
The 51-year-old has proven he can restore players to their former glories, but Adebayor may be a lost cause.
The 35-year-old scored just three times in Turkey last term, and his previous spell in England was almost embarrassing as he scored only once in 12 games for Crystal Palace as he looked like his legs were completely gone.
The striker is still earning a hefty pay packet as he apparently demanded a £58,000-a-week wage in Turkey.
His history of causing trouble and having poor attitude means that he may not be willing to adapt to Wilder’s teachings at Sheffield United.
Aged 35 he has probably achieved all there is to accomplish in his career which saw him play for Arsenal, Manchester City and Real Madrid.

He has never been one to give his all on the pitch, and it’s hard to see that changing if he signs for the Steel City outfit.
Some players are just bad eggs, and although Wilder may be tempted to bring Adebayor back to his former glories, it may prove to be just a bridge too far.
