da fezbet: Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wynass has told the Birmingham Mail that Chris Samba has “impressed everyone” in training as he bids to win a contract at the club.
What’s the latest?
da bet esporte: The 32-year-old defender was welcomed to Villa’s Bodymoor Heath training ground nine days ago to train with the first team.
Manager Steve Bruce is believed to be mulling over offering the Congo international a contract for the final few months of the season.
In an interview with the Birmingham Mail, Wyness spoke positively about Samba, but has left the decision firmly in the manager’s hands.
“Chris has been training for over a week. He’s impressed everyone so far but it’s the manager’s decision. I’ve yet to have any conversation with the manager about wanting him to join the squad. He’s fit, according to everyone I’ve spoken to, but it’s up to Steve Bruce.”
Is Samba worth a try?
There was a time when the defender was linked with Premier League giants during his time at Blackburn Rovers, but after making the move to Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala 2012, his stock dwindled.
Samba returned to England one year later to play for Queens Park Rangers, but he managed just 10 games and eventually returned to Anzhi before having spells at Dynamo Moscow and Panathinaikos.
The defender is a free agent, so the cost to sign him up would be minimal for Villa and if he has impressed on the training pitch, it is worth giving him a go.
There are seven teams in the Championship that have a better defensive record than Villa, who have conceded 38 goals and kept just eight clean sheets.
In a run of five straight league defeats, the Midlands outfit let in 11 goals, but they have been much tighter at the back, keeping clean sheets in recent wins over Derby County and Bristol City.
While Samba may not be a hero at the back, there is no harm in having him as an option.
