da dobrowin: Southampton have made enquiries about the availability of Atletico Madrid forward Kevin Gameiro, according to the Daily Mail.
What’s the story?
da dobrowin: The former Paris Saint-Germain striker has been at Atletico since his 2016 switch from Sevilla.
With Diego Costa back in the fold at the Vicente Calderon, Gameiro is staring at less game time.
In fact, the 30-year-old has started just seven games and appeared off the bench in a further five.
Despite the lack of minutes, the striker has still managed to score four goals in La Liga and produce an assist.
According to the Daily Mail, Southampton as well as Swansea City and Crystal Palace are interested in the forward.
The report claims that Swansea’s opening offer has been rejected by Atletico.
Is a deal realistic?
No disrespect to Southampton, but even if they met the rumoured £25m asking price, it would be a hard task for them to convince Gameiro to move to St Mary’s.
The British publication claims that the Frenchman would prefer a top six side, and the Saints are far from that.
At the moment, Mauricio Pellegrino’s side sit just one point above the relegation zone after 23 Premier League games.
The only real draw for Gameiro would be the fact that he could become a potential hero at Southampton, and he would certainly be the first name on the teamsheet.
Signing the three-time Europa League winner would be a massive coup for the Saints, and he is exactly what they need, but a deal looks unlikely.
